Q: How do I obtain a copy of a fire report?    
A fire report form can be obtained by calling the Fire Prevention Bureau at 614.645.7641 or downloaded FPB Form. Please have date of the incident or the incident number available. The fire report will be sent to you within three (3) business days of your request. Please be advise it usually takes five (5) business days for the report to be received at the Fire Prevention Bureau Office.    
     
     
Q: How do I obtain a burn permit?    
A burn permit must be obtained from the Columbus Division of Fire any time material is to be ignited outdoors within the boundaries of the City of Columbus. This application FPB Form must be completed in full and must be received by the Columbus Division of Fire no later than 10 business days prior to the proposed date of burning. Checks / money orders should be made payable to City of Columbus Treasurer / Fire and are the only acceptable means of payment. Failure to provide specific and accurate answers to the questions asked will result in the application being disapproved. If for any reason an application is disapproved, an inspection fee of $20.00 will be collected and all other fees will be returned. Permits are approved for the applicant only and are not transferable. Permits are valid only for the time period requested and approved by the Columbus Division of Fire. Note: Recreational fires do not need a permit, but are required to follow the guidelines listed below on Recreational fires.    
     
The Fire Prevention Bureau is located in room 148 at, 3639 Parsons Ave. Columbus, Ohio 43207. Completed permits may be picked up at this address also.    
     
     
(1) 307.1 General. A person shall not kindle or maintain or authorize to be kindled or maintained any open burning unless conducted and approved in accordance with this Section.

(2) 307.2 Permit required. A permit shall be obtained from the fire code official in accordance with the Fire Prevention Code prior to kindling a fire for all open burning, including, recognized silvicultural or range or wildlife management practices, prevention or control of disease or pests, a bonfire or a recreational fire. Application for such approval shall only be presented by and permits issued to the owner of the land upon which the fire is to be kindled.

(a) 307.2.1 Authorization. Where required by state or local law or regulations, open burning shall only be permitted with prior approval from the state or local air and water 7 Fire Code Adoption; General Provisions Ch. 1501 quality management authority, provided that all conditions specified in the authorization are followed.

(b) 307.2.2 Prohibited open burning. Open burning that will be offensive or objectionable because of smoke or odor emissions when atmospheric conditions or local circumstances make such fires hazardous shall be prohibited. The fire official is authorized to order the extinguishment by the permit holder or the fire department of open burning which creates or adds to a hazardous or objectionable situation.

(3) 307.3 Location. The location for open burning shall not be less than 50 feet (15 240 mm) front any structure, and provisions shall he made to prevent the fire from spreading to within 50 feet
(15 240 mm) of any structure.

Exceptions:
1. Fires in approved containers (i.e. containers approved by the fire official as safe for open
burning) that are not less than 15 feet (4572 mm) from a structure.

2. The minimum required distance from a structure shall be 25 feet (7620 mm) where the pile size is 3
feet (914 mm) or less in diameter and 2 feet (610mm) or less in height.

(a) 307.3.1 Bonfires. A bonfire shall not be conducted within 50 feet (15 240 mm) of a structure or combustible material unless the fire is contained in a barbecue pit. Conditions which could cause a fire to spread within 50 feet (15 240 mm) of a structure shall be eliminated prior to ignition.


(b) 307.3.2 Recreational fires. Recreational fires shall not be conducted within 25 feet (7620 mm) of a structure or combustible material. Conditions which could cause a fire to spread within 25 feet (7620 mm) of a structure shall be eliminated prior to ignition.

(4) 307.4 Attendance. All open burning fires shall be constantly attended until the fire is extinguished. A minimum of one portable fire extinguisher complying with paragraph (F)(906) of rule 1301:7-7-09 of the Administrative Code with a minimum 4-A rating or other approved on-site fire-extinguishing equipment,
such as dirt, sand, water barrel, garden hose or water truck,shall he available for immediate utilization.

Q: How do I obtain a occupancy sign/permit/Invoice?    
You must contact the building department/Trade and Development at 614.645.7314 to obtain a maximum occupancy certificate number. This number will be used to determine the fees required by the Fire Prevention Bureau and subsequent invoices and permits will be issued.    
     
     
Q: How do I receive a Public Assembly Permit Application?

Q: Are teachers allowed to hang up in hallway/classroom ceilings and walls any kind of decorative materials?    
Section FM-306.1.2 With an occupancy load of 50 person or more shall not exceed twenty percent of any individual wall or ceiling unless such material in non-combustible or flame resistant as specified in Section 306.1 Decorative Material. Exception: Classrooms are permitted to exceed the 20% when approved by the code Official.    
     
     
Q: Are teachers allowed to conduct class in the hallway throughout the day?    
Section (1) F-605.1 Obstructions (General): The means of egress from each part of the structure, aisles, corridors, etc; shall at all time be maintained in a safe condition, available for immediate utilization and free of all obstructions.    
     
     
Q: How are school inspections done throughout the year?    
Annual Inspections initially start in January, if a return visit is required a re-inspection is conducted on a scheduled date. If a complaint or enquiry is filed a visit to the school is made by a District Inspector or the Inspector assigned to the school.    
     
     
Q: What are the procedures a school is to follow in the event of an alarm sounding off?    
First, evacuate the building. Second, follow the procedures that have been established in their evacuation plan.    
     
     
Q: What is the fire code for the storage of Flammable Liquids?    
Chapter 28 of the Ohio Fire Code covers Flammable and Combustible Liquids. This code shall apply to the storage and processing of flammable and combustible liquids in addition to the requirements of Hazardous Materials.    
     
     
Q: Is there a fire code against space heater in the workspace?    
Yes, Section (1) FM-308.1 General Chimneys and Heating Appliances, state that all heat producing devices or appliances shall be constructed in accordance with the building and mechanical codes. City of Columbus Code 2501.6 Orders to eliminate dangerous of hazardous conditions, says that when the Fire Chief finds dangerous of hazardous conditions or material he shall order these thing removed or remedied in accordance with the provision of code 2501.6(A). This applies to dangerous conditions which are liable to cause of contribute to the spread of fire in or on above premises, building or structure. C.C.2501.6(G) applies to hazardous conditions arising from defective or improperly used or installed electrical wiring, equipment or appliances shall not be used.    
     
     
Q: Can we have our High/Rise evacuation plan reviewed by someone in the Fire Department?    
Yes, Columbus Cit Code 2509.05 Fire Safety plan and evacuation procedure in high rise building (A) (b) (C). and 2509.06 Fire Safety Director Certification in High Rise Building (A) (B) (C). Both section provide guidelines of owner responsibility for a High Rise safety plan.    
     
     
Q: Should stairway doors on every other floor be locked from the stairwell side?    
Only in non-emergency situations, 2000 Ohio Fire Code (H) section FM-608.0 Egress Doors (1) FM-608.1 Operable. All means of egress doors shall be readily operable from the side from which egress is to be made without a key, special knowledge or effort. (2) FM-608.2 Interior stairway door: All exits stairway doors in required exit stairways shall be operable from both sides without keys, special knowledge or effort at all times the structure or area served is occupied. Exception: Exit stairway discharge doors shall be operable from egress side and shall only be locked from the opposite side.    
     
     
Q: Should a building classified under the grandfather clause be required to have sprinklers in it?    
No, (E) Section F-504.0 Protection Maintenance (1) General, All fire protection systems which were installed in compliance with any law, ordinance or order, shall be maintained in an operative condition at all times E section F-504.2. 3. 4. 5 all apply    
     
     
Q: Can there be a live Christmas tree placed anywhere in the building?    
No, according to (F) Section FM-306.0 Decorative Material

Q: What requirements are there for propane gas at an event?    
All the rules and regulation of NFPA 58, standard for liquefied petroleum gas, are followed, in addition to the State Fire Code.

Q: What are you looking for when you inspect my cart?    
We do pushcart inspections as a courtesy for the License Bureau who requires them. We are looking for current tagged fire extinguisher, proper fuel line and cylinder, and a thermocouple on the burner.

 1. Working Smoke Detectors on each level including attic and basement.
 2. Evacuation plan with meeting place outside the front of the home.
 3. No storage of flammables or combustibles near furnace , hot water heater or open flame.
 4. All electrical outlets not being used should be covered with plastic covers.

Q: Who should we submit drawings to for the fire protection systems permits?    
The contractor submits to cashier 4 sets of drawings, application and fees to the city Department of Trade and Development. 757 Carolyn Av. Columbus Ohio 43224. The contractor also submits to the Fire Department 1 set of drawings, application and fees to the Fire Prevention Bureau Plans Review Officer 3939 Parson Av. Columbus Ohio 43207    
     
     
Q: How many fire extinguishers do we need and what location should they be in for an office, warehouse, retail/groceries store?    
This information can be found in NFPA 10 rule 1301.7-7-44 or contact a fire extinguisher inspection and recharging company in the yellow pages. The fire extinguisher needs to be inspected by one of these companies annually.    
     
     
Q: If there is more than two strobe lights in your direct line of site should they be synchronized?    
Yes, According to NFPA 72 6-4.1, OBBC 918.8, ADA 301-7    
     
     
Q: What type, size, color, location, illumination of exit light is required in a building?    
Information can be found in the Ohio basic building code book, Page 144 Section 1023.0-1023.4
